The Executive Board
The HCDH is led by an Executive Board comprising members of the HCDH, with two representatives each from the specialist areas of Digital Heritage, Digital Linguistics and AI/Machine Learning (IWR). The Scientific Director is also a voting member of the Executive Board.
The Executive Board is responsible for the further development of the Digital Humanities at Heidelberg University and represents the interests of the HCDH both internally and externally.
The Executive Director of the HCDH is Prof. Dr Vahram Atayan. The Managing Director is Dr Nele Schneidereit.

Dr Florian Nieser is the Academic Director of the Heidelberg Centre for Digital Humanities (HCDH). He studied German Language and Literature and Theology at the University of Tübingen, where he also undertook further study in the field of ‘Digital Humanities’. He completed his PhD in the field of heroic semiotics in Middle High German and Old French texts, also at Tübingen. From 2022 to 2024, he served as Executive Director of the HCDH, where he had previously worked from 2020 onwards as founder and academic coordinator of the Digital Humanities Forum. Prof. Dr Anette Frank is a researcher in computational linguistics with a background in linguistics and computer science. Her research focuses on corpus-based statistical approaches to semantic and discourse processing, and on applications built upon these. This includes natural language understanding, information access and NLP for cultural heritage. Prof. Dr Vahram Atayan is Head of the French Department at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting (IUED) and Executive Director of the HCDH. His areas of expertise include applied linguistics, translation and interpreting, and digital and computational humanities. Prof. Dr Georgia Koppe is a member of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Scientific Computing (IWR) and holds a cross-disciplinary professorship bridging machine learning and the digital humanities. Her research group, ‘Machine Learning Human Behaviour’, focuses on the study of human cognition and human behaviour. Prof. Dr Roland Herzog is Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Scientific Computing (IWR) and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Heidelberg. His research focuses, amongst other things, on scientific computing and machine learning. Prof. Dr Christiane Brosius is a professor of Ethnology and South Asian Studies at the Centre for Asian Studies and Transcultural Studies in Heidelberg. Prof. Dr Christian Witschel is Professor of Roman History at Heidelberg and Executive Director of the Heidelberg Centre for Cultural Heritage (HCCH). He is also a member of the Research and Strategy Commission at Heidelberg University. His main areas of research include the history of the 3rd century AD, the cultural heritage of humanity (with a focus on outreach) and digital heritage. |
